Head Coach - Eric Matthews

Eric Matthews grew up in Arvada, Colorado and graduated from Standley Lake High School where he was a three sport letterman. His baseball honors in his Junior and Senior seasons included 1st Team All-District, 1st Team All State, and was selected to Team USA for the Goodwill Games in Sydney, Australia. At Barton County Community College in Great Bend Kansas he received Jayhawk All Star Selection his Freshman and Sophomore seasons. He then signed at Lamar University in Beaumont Texas where he was selected 1st Team All Sunbelt Conference and All Region Second Team his Senior season. Eric then went on to play professional baseball for the next 4 years for managers such as Hal Lanier and coaches Ron Guidry and Bob Kipper.

While completing his college degree he was an assistant coach under Jim Gilligan at Lamar University. He went on to help as an assistant coach at Beaumont Kelly High School before moving to Kingwood with his wife Rae. While in Kingwood Eric was an assistant coach for 5 years under David Denny helping guide the Mustangs to their first State Final Four appearance in 2004 and their first State Title in 2005. Eric and his wife Rae have two children, Parker and Emma.

Eric's roots to Houston started at birth with his grandparents Gene and Anne Elston. His Hall of Fame grandfather was the voice of the Houston Astros. Eric grew up spending the summers learning the game in the Astrodome watching the likes of Nolan Ryan, Mike Scott, and Jose Cruz.

 

Assistant Coach - Paul Hinson

Coach Hinson is a native of Humble, Texas and a graduate of Humble High School. He played for current Humble High Coach David Sitton. Prior to graduation, Paul was a three-year letterman for the Wildcats.

After graduating from Humble, Paul accepted a scholarship to Angelina Junior college in Lufkin, Texas. An All-Conference catcher, Paul caught all but 10 games during his two years on campus. After Angelina College, Paul accepted a scholarship to Houston Baptist University where played for Brian Huddleston. The Huskies turned in one of its most successful seasons in which they advanced to the Regional finals in his senior year.

Prior to graduation with a Bachelors degree in English and Kinesiology, Paul accepted a Volunteer Assistant coaching job with the Huskies. His duties were with the catchers and hitters. That season, the Huskies again advanced to the Regional finals. Paul then accepted a Graduate Assistant coaching position at Texas A&M under the legendary Mark Johnson. Paul worked mainly with the outfielders, catchers and hitters. While at Texas A&M, he earned his Masters in Education Administration. His first high school coaching position was at Sam Rayburn High School in Pasadena where he was an assistant baseball coach. This is currently his second year at Atascocita where he also coaches football and teaches English.

Paul enjoys spending time with his beautiful wife, Stephanie, and there 1 year old daughter, Katelynn. Paul and Stephanie are expecting their second child in August.

Sophomore Coach - Randy Tumlison

 

Randy Tumlison is a graduate from Kingwood High in 2000.  After graduating, he went to Blinn Jr. College then tranferred to Kingwood College where he earned his Associate of Arts degree in History and played/coached for their baseball team.  He then transferred to Sam Houston State where he played for their club team before earning his Bachelor's degree in Dec. 2005 with a Major in History and a Minor is Business.  Randy played Catcher and Outfield throughout high school and college.  His biggest moment in baseball was hitting 2 homeruns in one game including a walk off homerun to beat Tulane in a tournament game when playing for Kingwood College.  This is Randy's second year in teaching and volunteer coaching.  He enjoys hanging out with his wife Kristina who also teaches at AHS.  They were married April 1, 2006.  His favortie players growing up were Craig Biggio, Tony Gwynn, and Cal Ripken Jr.
